According to various historical records, the Chinese entered Indonesia from the Tang Dynasty in the 7th century, when they landed on Java island. Many Chinese cultures are slowly entering Indonesia, from traditional ceremonies to the influence of China on the cooking of Indonesian archipelago food.

This can be seen from some famous food in Indonesia. Chinese food has been introduced to Indonesia for a long time. According to reports from various sources, there are some unique Chinese foods that have been circulating in Indonesia for a long time.

1. Dough sticks

Fried dough sticks are a popular street snack in Indonesia. This snack from China has a long history and was once called “fried ghost” (fried cypress).

According to historical records, Youtiao is said to be a form of protest by Chinese citizens against the death of a general in the 12th century (Yue Fei). In the Song Dynasty, it was even mentioned that the fried dough sticks symbolized the ghost of being bombed, because of their slender and flat shape.

In Indonesia, the residents who eat fried dough sticks are evenly distributed. For example, in suragada, Central Java province, fried dough sticks are usually used with soybean milk; In West Java province, fried dough sticks are crispy and then dipped in slightly sour pepper sauce.

2. Meat balls

Bakso is a dish that appeared after Chinese immigrants landed in Indonesia thousands of years ago. At first, meatballs came from China. They appeared in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, around the end of the Ming Dynasty in the 17th century.

Unlike in China, where pork is used to process meatballs, in Indonesia, meatballs are usually made of beef. But many people also use chicken, fish, shrimp and buffalo to make meatballs.

In Indonesia, several regions are famous for meatball dishes. Such as Wonogiri, solo and Malang. Judging from these three cities, the development of meat balls in Indonesia is growing rapidly.

3.Bakpia

Although known as a typical souvenir of Yogyakarta, bakpia (thin skin pie) has a long history. This flat round snack comes from China.

In China, this kind of pie is called “touluk PIA”, which means green bean pie. The word bakpia itself comes from the Fujian dialect of China, that is, “bak” means meat, and “PIA” means pie. It literally means meat pie.

4. Triangle dumplings

Bakcang is a traditional Chinese food, which is made of rice or glutinous rice with chicken, beef or pork stuffing. It is also very common in Indonesia.

5. Wangjiaxi beef offal soup

Coto Makassar (wangjiaxi beef miscellaneous soup) is improved from Chinese cuisine. In the past, there were Chinese businessmen in Indonesia who cooked local food with spices brought by China. It is understood that there are about 40 kinds of spices for cooking Coto Makassar, such as candela, clove, nutmeg, lemon grass, galangal, pepper, onion, ginger, white coriander, lime leaf, bay leaf, sugar mixing, tamarind, cinnamon and leek.
